2016 Kentucky Derby

07.05.2016

It’s not often that a horse named for a former hockey star wins the Kentucky Derby, but Nyquist (named for Gustav Nyquist) did just that today at Churchill Downs with a time of 2:01.31—and extended his unbeaten record to 8-0. The pre-race favorite, he paid $6.60. Exaggerator was second by 1-1/4 lengths and Gun Runner third by 4-1/2.

Though the 142nd Kentucky Derby lasted just over two minutes the Run for the Roses’ trademark showcase of outlandish and over-the-top hats unfolded all day long.

Well-heeled horse racing fans flocked to this year’s event, with floral and feather flourishes as always dominating the sea of fanciful hats, flecked of course with a splendid array of men’s boaters and fedoras.

But towering creations stood out the most, with lofty hats sporting everything from long-necked birds and American flags to soaring spires and climbing roses.

A slew of celebrities also trotted down the Derby red carpet in glamorous headwear: Among them Lindsey Vonn and Kate Upton, who both donned elegant wide-brimmed hats, and commentators Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir, who flaunted far more ostentatious toppers.
