About City
Agrigento is a town in Sicily, the capital of the province of Agrigento which consists of 43 towns. Agrigento is the largest one of them. It is located in the southern part of Sicily, on the hilly seacoast of the Strait of Sicily. As of 2010, the population of the town is 65,466.
Today, tourism and services flourish in Agrigento, as well as construction material production. In historical and cultural perspective, the province has many antiquities of the 6-3 centuries BC, museums (Archeological museum is especially notable), castles and gothic churches of the 13-14 centuries AD. For leisure and therapy, the nature granted this land its famous thermal springs in Sciacca, 70 km from Agrigento.
The town gained the name Agrigento in 1927 through serious changes from the Greek ‘Akragas’, Roman ‘Agrigentum’ and Arabic ‘Jirjent’. The first settlements in this land were founded by Greek colonists in 582 BC. Now Agrigento is a modern town developed around its medieval center.
The true gem of Agrigento constantly attracting loads of tourists is the Valley of Temples – a sacred area ancients selected for lightnings, celebrations and forums. The Greek poet Pindar called Agrigento “the most beautiful city of mortals”.
On June 10, 2005, the protocol of intentions was signed between Perm City Council (Russia) and Municipal Council of Agrigento (Italia) envisaging all-round development of relationships between the two towns and aimed to establishing stable friendly ties in cultural, educational, trading and business fields. The Agreement on development of friendly (twinning) ties between towns of Perm and Agrigento was signed by Igor Sapko, the Mayor of Perm, the Chairman of Perm City Council, and Marco Zambuto, the Mayor of Agrigento on July 5, 2012.
